Built Different: Hard Spun Colt Romps in Gun Runner Stakes

Built (Hard Spun), a maiden winner at second asking at Keeneland Oct. 6, stretched to two turns in style with a daylight victory in Saturday's Gun Runner Stakes at Fair Grounds, good for 10 points on the Road to the GI Kentucky Derby.

Off at odds of 7-2, the rail-drawn Built showed the way through fractions of :24.64 and :49.23 and dropped the hammer in the stretch to win by 6 3/4 lengths. Magnitude (Not This Time) was second; Render Judgment (Blame) was third. Heavily favored 'TDN Rising Star' Admiral Dennis (Constitution) was a well-beaten fourth after stumbling at the start.

“You always like it when the pace is slow and you're on the lead,” winning trainer Wayne Catalano said. “Drawing the rail with speed, he handled it well. These are the moments you work every day and get up in the morning for. Today was our day. I appreciate the opportunities all our clients give us and all our help back in the barn.”

Built, an $82,000 KEESEP yearling turned $260,000 OBSAPR breezer, was a well-beaten fourth (elevated to third via disqualification) behind subsequent GISW and 'TDN Rising Star' East Avenue (Medaglia d'Oro) on debut at Ellis Park Aug. 24. He becomes the 109th stakes winner for Hard Spun. The winner's dam Sea Garden (Curlin), purchased for $40,000 by Tom McCrocklin in foal to Union Rags at the 2022 KEENOV sale, is also represented by a yearling colt by Union Rags. She was bred to Flameaway for 2025.

It's been a fantastic recent run for winning owner Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners following 'TDN Rising Star' and GISW Locked (Gun Runner)'s win in the GII Cigar Mile H. Dec. 7 and Journalism (Curlin)'s win in the GII Los Alamitos Futurity last Saturday. Eclipse campaigns Locked in partnership with Walmac Farm. Journalism is co-owned by Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Elayne Stables 5 LLC and Robert LaPenta.
